Materials
Steel
Gränsfors Bruk uses steel from Ovako that derives entirely from recycled scrap. The scrap is sorted into different grades and the steelworks uses a mix of these for the steel that it produces. As one of Europe’s largest, and indeed leading, steelworks, Ovako has a strong commitment to the environment and invests much of its resources in product development, process

Axe handle
The handle on Gränsfors Bruk’s axes was designed by Hans Erik Persson. Gränsfors Bruk’s handle is made from hickory, the perfect wood because it is both strong and flexible, with long, parallel fibers.
The wood is dried before turning. One of the most common causes of an axe head coming loose from its handle is that a green, the undried handle has been used, which then dries out, shrinks and comes loose.
In order to further improve the quality of the handle, it is soaked in hot linseed oil. The handle is then treated with beeswax to make it more resistant to dirt and water.
Leather sheath
Gränsfors axes come with a sheath made from vegetable-tanned leather. The tanning preserves and improves the natural properties of the leather and can be done either through treatment with natural vegetable products such as bark from various trees, flowers, and roots, known as vegetable tanning or through treatment with chromium, known as chrome tanning.
Gränsfors Bruk sources its leather from Tärnsjö Garveri, one of the few tanneries in Sweden that still produces vegetable-tanned leather. (SOURCE)

Gränsfors Bruks Small Forest Axe F.A.Q.
Question: What is the difference between this and the Hunter’s Axe?
Answer: The hunters ax is a handle is a little shorter and the profile is slightly straighter. I have a couple other axes that are close to the hunters ax profile however, my go to is the small forest ax. It is just an amazing tool and the handle profile for me, is PERFECT. It is long enough that if you need to do a little more serious chopping you can do so with little effort. For small branch and firewood processing it’s not too heavy and easy to control with one hand. SHARP, wicked SHARP, and holds a great edge. You will not be disappointed with either tool but my money is on the small forest axe.
Question: What type of edge does it have?
Answer: It is a convex edge that is fairly robust the edge is extremely sharp from the factory, sharp enough to shave with. This axe is great for limbs and processing firewood but fully capable of felling a full size tree.
Question: Where is this Axe made?
Answer: Sweden.
